Data Standards are stronger together rather than apart. No open, voluntary data standard should compete with another. Instead, collaboration among standards bodies, agencies, and educational organizations is key to supporting learners throughout their entire journey, from early childhood to retirement. Data Standards United is NOT a new organization, but a joint project among various standards bodies, working together to maximize the impact and service to their communities.
In this session, leaders from various standards organizations will engage the audience in a discussion about common myths surrounding standards and explore collaborative approaches to standardization.
12:00pm-1:30pm – Luncheon
1:30pm-2:15pm – Acronym Bingo
Speakers:
- Michael Feldstien, Chief Strategy Officer, 1EdTech
- Alex Jackl, Data Standards United Chair / CEO & Founder, Bardic Systems
- David Moldoff, PESC Board Chair / CEO & Founder, AcademyOne
- Alexis Rossi, Director – MedBiquitous, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
- Steve Smith, Executive Director, Access 4 Learning (A4L) Community
In this session, we’ll continue our discussion on how data standardization and collaboration can advance the work of agencies, organizations, and learners. We’ll also begin to tackle the often-confusing landscape of jargon, acronyms, and specialized terminology used by educators, technologists, and data scientists when addressing these topics. Additionally, we’ll provide guidance on how to identify key concepts you should focus on, as well as the important questions to ask when working with vendors, standards, or organizations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already playing a transformative role in the world of standards, helping to automate and streamline processes behind the scenes. This session provides a broad look at four major aspects of how AI, data usage, and Standards intersect:
1. How AI technologies are influencing the work of standards bodies and improving efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration. We’ll explore real-world examples from A4L and CEDS , including:
a. A4L Unity Data Generator: A tool leveraging AI to automate data generation for testing and compliance.
b. CEDS Copilot: How AI assists in aligning educational standards, offering intelligent guidance and support.
c. ChatGPT Chatbots: A look at how AI-driven chatbots are enhancing communication and support in the standards space.
2. How can standards be applied to the dynamic, self-generative world of AI?
3. How do we ensure privacy and security for learners as they move through the lifecycle of the learner?
4. How do we ensure privacy and security for learners as they move through the lifecycle of the learner?
Attendees will walk away with a clearer understanding of the AI tools currently shaping the future of standards, how standards might shape the future of AI, and how these innovations can be applied to their own work in a way that is safe and secure for the learner.

8:30am-9:15am – Getting Ready for the Present: Project CAD for
Interoperable Academic Credentials (Community Submission)
- Victoriano Giralt, Head of Systems Administration Service, University of Malaga
Higher education is facing a new reality: In our increasingly digital world, student identities need secure and reliable management. This session explores the challenges of traditional paper and digital documentation, particularly for students participating in cross-border study programs.
Launched in 2021, the Digital Academic Credentials (CAD) Project utilizes blockchain technology to provide students with a “sovereign digital identity” (SSI). This empowers students with control over their data and facilitates secure issuance of verifiable credentials like diplomas and student ID cards.
The CAD system offers colleges and universities a complete solution, managing both credential issuance and verification. It also integrates with European and Spanish identity models, ensuring flexibility and compliance with regulations.
The project has been a joint effort between 11 Spanish universities with support of EU funds distributed by the Spanish government, and has been developed by Inetum, a Spanish multinational company with strong ties to the educational sector.
This session goes beyond the CAD Project, exploring the future of digital credentials in higher education. We’ll discuss:
- The benefits of blockchain for secure and verifiable credentials
- Compatibility with European frameworks like EuroPass and ELM
- Next steps for portability and broader applications
Join us and discover how digital credentials are shaping a more secure and efficient future for universities and students alike.

Digital badges, micro-credentials, and records like the CLR
and LER are consistently proffered as an important part of the future
supporting learning mobility; however, many entities have not yet scaled
efforts and moved beyond hypothetical discussions. In this conversation
panelists will discuss their thoughts on the importance of standards and the
roles standards play in helping organizations move beyond theory while also
engaging with audience participants on best practices or strategic activities
one can take back to their organizations to accelerate their activities in this
emerging space.
11:15am-12:00pm – Collecting and Using Data About the Educator Workforce (Community Submission)
Speaker:
- Susan Williams, Director of Data Standards and Governance, National Forum on Education Statistics / VA Department of Education
The National Forum on Education Statistics (Forum) is developing a new resource, entitled the Forum Guide to Collecting and Using Data about the Educator Workforce. This resource is intended to help education agencies identify the types of workforce data that are most useful for understanding immediate teacher shortages and monitoring educator supply and demand, as well as best practices for using these data.
This guide delves specifically into questions around data related to educator workforce supply and demand while building upon the best practices and privacy protections outlined in the 2021 publication the Forum Guide to Staff Records. The primary audience for this publication includes staff in schools, local and state education agencies, and the federal government whose responsibilities include any aspect of collecting, reporting, analyzing, or using educator workforce data.
Join this session to learn more about this resource from a member of the Forum working group that is developing the new guide.
